Back to Estate & Legacy

Most people have heard of a Will. Far fewer have heard of a Letter of Administration. Yet many families end up needing one, often at the worst possible time.

What is it?

A Letter of Administration is a court order that gives someone the legal authority to manage and distribute a deceased person's estate. It is used when someone passes away without a valid Will.

Without it, nobody has the legal right to touch the deceased's bank accounts, sell their property, or distribute their assets to the family. Everything sits frozen until the courts process the application.

How is it different from probate?

If there is a Will, the executor named in it applies for a Grant of Probate, which confirms their authority to act. If there is no Will, there is no named executor, so a family member must apply to be appointed administrator instead. That document is the Letter of Administration.

The end result is similar. But getting there is typically slower, more expensive and more stressful.

Who can apply?

Singapore law sets out a priority order. A spouse goes first, then children, then parents, then siblings. If multiple people have equal standing, the court decides.

What does it cost?

Cost ItemEstimated Amount
Legal fees
$3,000 to $8,000+
Court filing and medical report fees
$500 to $1,500
Security bond (annual, ongoing)
$200 to $400 per year
Estimated total to get started
$5,000 to $10,000+

On top of cost, a straightforward application typically takes three to six months. If the estate is complex or family members disagree, it can stretch much longer. The estate remains in limbo the entire time.

The simplest fix

A properly drafted Will removes the need for a Letter of Administration entirely. It names an executor, sets out your wishes, and gives your family a clear path forward without courts, without delays and without uncertainty.

If you do not have a Will yet, this is one of the clearest reasons to act. The process is simpler than most people expect, and the cost is a fraction of what your family would face without one.
